The Government of Mexico delivered this Sunday, through the embassy, a request for the extradition of Genaro García Luna to the US State Department, according to EFE. The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported at the end of November that it would request the extradition of the former official, for the alleged crime of illicit enrichment.
According to the agency, it was identified that García Luna increased his assets by more than 27 million pesos illegally. The agency has, in turn, an open investigation folder against García Luna after his arrest in the United States.
The defense of the former secretary of Public Security during the administration of Felipe Calderón pointed out this Monday that he has not been able to speak with his client since October and, in addition, he has been isolated for more than 40 days.
“César de Castro says that, until today, he has not been able to speak to GGL since October 20. He says that GGL ‘has been in isolation for the last 40 days because they transferred him somewhere and are putting him in quarantine.’ It’s still in it, I’m not sure when it will come out, “as posted on Twitter by VICE reporter Keegan Hamilton.
Judge Brian Cogan pointed out that the pandemic has made the process difficult, but determined that the facilities be given to García Luna and his litigant, so that he could review the evidence of his case.
To this was added the delay in the presentation of evidence by prosecutors for three weeks, so that the former official can decide how he will proceed legally. Present in today’s lawsuit were Michael Robotti, a prosecutor from the trial of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, and Ryan Harris, Hamilton said.
The session, held in the Eastern Court of New York and broadcast live via telephone, lasted just 20 minutes and in it the charges were read to García Luna, registered in the criminal indictment CR 19-576.
Likewise, the topic of the session was announced, beginning with the analysis of the request made by the Prosecutor’s Office to postpone the session for 60 days and thus give the parties the opportunity to continue with the review of 760 thousand new evidence against the former official , registered in a file of more than 955 thousand pages.
