Google has introduced a new generation of Nest devices, including new models with battery and internal storage.
Although Nest initially focused on home security, including cameras, doorbells and smoke detectors, in recent years it has become Google’s big bet on the smart home. But the great disadvantage of the Internet of Things is that it needs that, the Internet.
The new Nest models don’t. Thanks to the internal storage, and the use of batteries, these cameras are able to monitor our house and send us notifications when events occur, without having to pay a subscription; this is a big change that will make them more accessible to more people.
Apart from the batteries, the great novelty is that these cameras will be able to record up to an hour of video without the need for an Internet connection, thanks to the integrated internal storage.
Not only that, but the cameras are able to analyze the video on their own , without using Google servers, for the most relevant types of events, such as if they detect people, animals or vehicles, in which case they will send a notification to the mobile.
This will be especially useful to maintain surveillance of our home, even if we lose the Internet connection; for example, because there is a crash of our operator. In a situation like that, conventional cameras are of little use, but the new Nest will be able to continue monitoring and providing notifications.
Google also continues to offer us the same service in the cloud, with a free mode that allows us to store up to three hours of video of event history. But it also offers the subscription service Nest Aware , which extends the term to 30 days for 5 euros per month, and Nest Aware Plus, which offers 60 days of video history and 10 days of continuous video for 10 euros per month.
The new battery- powered Google Nest Cam is the company’s first indoor and outdoor camera that can be powered by an internal battery, rather than relying on a nearby outlet.
Like other models, it is able to withstand inclement weather, and uses Google algorithms to detect events such as the arrival of a person or a car. You can use two types of supports, although the one designed for interior will have to be purchased separately. It will cost 199.99 euros on the Google page from August 24.
The Google Nest Doorbell with battery, meanwhile, is a smart doorbell with a camera and internal battery, also the first of its kind for Google. It allows us to monitor the door of our house 24 hours a day, and since we do not need cables, we can install it in any home without the need to drill holes. Otherwise, it has the usual Nest features, such as detection of delivered packages. It will cost 199.99 euros, and will be available on August 24.
Finally, the normal Google Nest Cam is also renewed, now with a new cheaper version, which will cost only 99.99 euros in exchange for maintaining the cable, but this model will arrive later in the year.
