New Snapdragon 888+ announced, the processor that will carry your next high-end mobile. Qualcomm’s new SoC is an evolution of the Snapdragon 888. Major brands have already confirmed that they will use it.
Qualcomm has taken advantage of the MWC in Barcelona to present the new Snapdragon 888+, the successor to one of the most powerful mobile processors today, with improvements such as better performance in Artificial Intelligence and higher frequencies.
The Snapdragon 888 is one of the best options for high-end Android phones, with a performance that has few rivals. So it makes all the sense in the world that Qualcomm has decided to continue on the same path, with a new version that improves some aspects, but is not a revolution as such.
The name Snapdragon 888+ says it all, this is a “plus” version of an existing processor. The big difference from the current model is that the Kyro 680 CPU now reaches up to 3 GHz (exactly 2,995 GHz). That should translate into higher performance compared to mobiles that now have the normal version.
The effect is remarkable, but not surprising. The performance reaches 32 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second), while the current Snapdragon 888 reaches 26 TOPS. It’s a difference that should be more noticeable in more demanding applications and games.
An other big difference is in AI Engine, for calculations related to Artificial Intelligence; Qualcomm affirms that now it is 20% faster , which the mobiles that mount it should be better in this type of operation.
Otherwise, the Snapdragon 888+ is based on the same hardware as its predecessor and therefore has the same advantages. For example, it has the same 5G Snapdragon X60 modem, with which the models that mount it should be able to offer download speeds of up to 7.5 Gbps if the network allows it. It also has the same GPU, an Adreno 660.
It is inevitable that the Snapdragon 888+ will appear in many high-end Android phones from now on; Brands such as Asus, Motorola, Oppo, Xiaomi and Vivo have already confirmed that they will use it in their next models, which could arrive in the third quarter of 2021.
