Repco, an Australian business, made a big advance by introducing the first rowing machine with air resistance. This concept used a flywheel and fan blades to generate resistance, which nearly resembled the sensation of rowing on water. The harder the user rowed, the stronger the resistance, resulting in a dynamic and realistic workout.

In 1981, brothers Dick and Peter Dreissigacker created the Concept2 rowing machine, which built on their earlier creation. This machine not only better replicated the rowing sensation, but it also had a performance monitor for tracking data like speed, distance, and calories burned. The Concept2 immediately established the gold standard for indoor rowers and is still frequently used in competitive and leisure settings.

Indoor rowing machines are becoming a vital part of many people’s workout routines across the world. They provide a low-impact, full-body workout that is appropriate for all fitness levels. Modern machines are built to be lightweight, sturdy, and often collapsible for convenient storage. Advanced performance monitors deliver real-time feedback, allowing users to properly track their development.

The popularity of indoor rowing has also resulted in the establishment of rowing studios and virtual courses where participants can participate in group rowing sessions, which are frequently accompanied by motivational music and instruction.
