The Zaldy Spring 2027 menswear show arrived at the Chelsea Hotel this season with a pirate ship set, a collection titled ‘Johnny Overboard,’ and a designer who has quietly been one of fashion’s most experienced hands for three decades. This was only his second menswear outing under his own name, but calling it a sophomore effort would miss the point entirely.
Zaldy’s official biography lists credits that most designers would trade a limb for: three Emmys, a Costume Design Guild Award, eight prior NYFW namesake runway collections, stage costumes for Lady Gaga’s ‘The Monster Ball,’ Britney Spears’s ‘Femme Fatale,’ Pink’s ‘Beautiful Trauma,’ and currently Katy Perry’s ‘Lifetimes’ world tour. He has been designing every look RuPaul wears on Drag Race and its various spin-offs since the pair began collaborating on the 1992 single ‘Supermodel.’ The menswear label, then, is not a reinvention. It is an artist deciding to make something for himself.
His debut collection, ‘Boys Like Me,’ showed at the same Chelsea Hotel on 15 February 2026. This second collection keeps the venue, deepens the concept, and loosens the silhouette considerably. ‘Last season was very tight and solid,’ Zaldy said. ‘For this one, I allowed myself to go for it, and to not be scared.’
The Pirate Concept, Taken Seriously
The set was a pirate ship deck and models walked a literal plank. That part was entertainment. The clothes took the conceit somewhere more considered: pirating as a metaphor for cultural mixing, archival raiding, and formal rule-breaking.
‘I was thinking of this idea of pillaging and plundering, having different cultures come together for the first time,’ Zaldy said. ‘It was about having the fun and freedom to mix things up with fabrications, textures, and colors.’
The opening look set the tone well: a boxy, tweed-like jacket with croc-embossed panels, worn over a silky white top with long neckties. After that, a black sheer deep-V top built from alternating strips of sports mesh and chiffon. The hybrid worked because neither material overwhelmed the other, and the result sat somewhere between athletic and openly sensual, which seems to be exactly where Zaldy wants to operate.
There was fabric manipulation throughout, some of it looking deliberately rough at the surface. A patchwork jacket cropped above the chest was the most overt use of skin as design element, but it carried weight beyond the obvious: Zaldy drew on the traditional Filipino barong, covering the silhouette in strips of made-in-Africa textiles and vintage ribbons from the 1940s. ‘I wanted to pirate my own culture,’ he said. ‘We have these beautiful buttoned jackets.’ The result was something genuinely hybrid rather than merely decorative.
What the Zaldy Spring 2027 Menswear Collection Actually Delivered
The archive raiding extended to his own back catalogue. A black-and-white cotton-eyelet pair of shorts referenced a childhood experiment: at 12, he cut masking tape into squares and spray-painted a checkerboard pattern onto a jacket. ‘I wanted to do that technique again,’ he said. The shorts carried that handmade, slightly obsessive energy without looking naively crafted.
A pink and green brocade evening suit with a mossy silk top showed he can do polished glamour when he chooses to. It served as a reminder of his time as head designer for Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. Collection, and his work across three Cirque du Soleil productions, including the permanent Las Vegas show Michael Jackson ONE. When the craft is in service of the theatrical, Zaldy rarely miscalculates.
A handful of women’s looks appeared in the show, including a pink and green diagonal-striped slip dress originally worn by Karen Elson at his 2005 collection, now modified and revived. Zaldy built his name in womenswear before the menswear chapter began, so the reintroduction felt less like a pivot and more like a reminder of the breadth behind the label. For now, though, the menswear is where the gap in the New York market sits, and ‘Johnny Overboard’ fills it with more confidence than his debut managed.
The question for next season is whether the theatrical framing, pirates one outing, bikers the last, starts to feel like a formula, or whether the clothes keep outrunning the concept. Based on the brocade suit and the Filipino patchwork jacket, the clothes are still winning. Katy Perry is currently wearing his work around the world on her ‘Lifetimes’ tour. His own label deserves the same attention.
The Chelsea Hotel will be watching to see if ‘Johnny Overboard’ is the collection that puts the hotel back on the fashion circuit permanently, or just a very good party on a very good set.
