Units subsequently appeared on eBay for as much as $1,850, before resale prices settled to around $800–$1,000 in the following week and dropped to approximately $450 at the time of Fortune’s reporting. What the Codex Micro Keypad Actually Does
The full product name is Codex Micro, developed through a ‘Work Louder Co-Lab’ collaboration and sold via OpenAI’s Supply Co. storefront. The hardware pairs with ChatGPT and its agentic coding tool Codex. It features six frosted ‘agent’ keys at the top, which can be assigned to specific projects or ChatGPT sessions, and six command keys below them for controlling those programmes. A dedicated dictation button lets you hold and talk; a ‘send’ button submits the request. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or USB cable.
Those are the basics from the hands-on. What the snippet does not fully convey is the hardware underneath. The Work Louder product page reveals a rotary dial for adjusting the AI’s reasoning level on the fly, a joystick for triggering coding workflows such as reviewing pull requests or debugging errors, and support for six programmable layers, so you can organise completely different workflow layouts on the same device. The unit also ships with the Codex Icon Keyset, which includes 32 extra keycaps for further customisation.
The colour-coding system asks for a little memorising: white means an agent is idle, blue means it is thinking, green signals task complete, red signals an error. Once you have that down and have programmed your preferred keys, the experience reportedly clicks into place, especially when the dictation button and per-project key assignments are used together.
Hard-core coders, the device’s supposed core audience, have been less than impressed. Reddit reviews have been largely negative, with one user calling it ‘a prank and not a real product.’ The independent outlet Aftermath was harsher still, with a review titled ‘OpenAI’s expensive macropad feels engineered to piss me off specifically.’ The headline rather neatly captures the $230 price-tag anxiety when cheaper DIY and off-the-shelf alternatives exist. If you are a ChatGPT power user with a taste for clicky, vintage-looking hardware, the calculus may be different, but for everyone else, the learning curve competes directly with the mouse and keyboard you already know how to use.
The Legal Storm Surrounding OpenAI’s Hardware Push
The Codex Micro arrives at a legally turbulent moment for OpenAI’s hardware ambitions. Apple filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in July 2026, alleging misappropriation of trade secrets. The complaint names two former Apple employees now at OpenAI: Chang Liu, a former senior system electrical engineer, and Tang Yew Tan, former vice president of product design for iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple’s filing states that more than 400 former Apple employees now work for OpenAI, according to Reuters.
The allegations are detailed. AP News reports that Apple accuses Liu of downloading confidential hardware files from an Apple-issued device he retained after leaving, and accuses Tan of directing job candidates still employed at Apple to bring ‘actual parts’ to OpenAI interviews for ‘show and tell’ sessions. Tan is further accused of coaching departing Apple staff on how to evade Apple’s security procedures and of soliciting details about unannounced products.
The Guardian quotes Apple’s complaint directly: ‘OpenAI’s nascent hardware business now rests on the shakiest of foundations, rotten to its core by its illegal reliance on misappropriated trade secrets.’ The stolen documents are alleged to include technical specifications, engineering presentations, proprietary project data, and details of vendors and contractors in Apple’s supply chain. The lawsuit came shortly after OpenAI had fended off a separate legal challenge from Elon Musk’s xAI.
The broader hardware story extends well beyond the Codex Micro. OpenAI acquired io Products, an AI devices startup co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, to build devices for the generative AI era. Reuters cites the acquisition price at $6.5 billion; Fortune puts it at $6.4 billion. Using the Reuters figure, and noting the discrepancy, the deal was announced in May 2025. Ive’s studio LoveFrom is also involved in OpenAI’s device business. Separately, a screenless smart-home speaker is in development, led by Evans Hankey, Apple’s former head of industrial design. TechCrunch reported in July 2026 that the device is described as a portable, camera-equipped companion that runs an advanced version of GPT-Live voice mode and features mechanical moving parts, which sounds either delightful or deeply unsettling depending on your tolerance for anthropomorphised gadgets.
For now, the Codex Micro keypad is what OpenAI has in the market: a niche, expensive, sold-out accessory that coders are debating and scalpers are profiting from. If the resale trajectory continues downward from that $450 secondary-market price, a clearance-priced Codex Micro might eventually make a compelling impulse buy. At list price, you are paying for the novelty of being early to OpenAI hardware. Whether that novelty is worth more than a long afternoon with a DIY macro-pad kit is the question the Aftermath review clearly thinks it has already answered.
