Switzerland has authorized the use of ‘Sacro’, an assisted suicide capsule, for those who ask for a dignified death . The system was created years ago by Philip Nitschke, considered by some “the Elon Musk of assisted suicide.”
Sacrum is a capsule in which the person inside can easily control and activate the system to have a desired and painless death. The invention puts the patient to sleep to end his life by inhalation of nitrogen.
In the European country, assisted suicide is legal, which is not the same as euthanasia . While in the first case, a second person only provides the necessary tools so that the patient can kill himself, euthanasia implies that that second person is in charge of giving the patient a dignified death.
For years, Sacro had not received legal approval, but that seems to have changed. Now, the machine has become an easy solution for those who want to perform assisted suicide to kill themselves without having to rely on third parties.
The invention can be manufactured with a 3D printer and to activate it the patient must be inside and press a button or blink. In doing so, the system fills the interior of the capsule with nitrogen.
As Sacro fills with nitrogen, oxygen is reduced from 21% to 1% in just 30 seconds. The person will lose consciousness and death will occur in approximately 5-10 minutes from hypoxia and hypocapnia, oxygen deprivation and carbon dioxide.
Nitschke, its creator, has explained that the person who wishes to die with Sacro will not feel pain: “There is no panic or a feeling of suffocation.” However, the inventor acknowledges that the prototypes of his system are not “aesthetically pleasing” and still need to be polished.
