The Apple iPhone Duo launch is here: Apple held its ‘Surprise and Shine’ keynote on Wednesday, 9 September at 10am PDT, and it delivered the foldable iPhone the industry has been anticipating for years. The event, held at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park per MacRumors, ran approximately 70 minutes.
The device was widely rumoured as the ‘iPhone Ultra.’ Apple had other ideas. The official name is the iPhone Duo, and it is the company’s first foray into foldable hardware, arriving roughly seven years after Samsung first shipped a folding phone.
What the iPhone Duo Actually Is
Open the Duo and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR folding inner display with nano-texture finish. Close it and the outer display measures 5.4 inches, offering more than 90 per cent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro, according to Apple’s product page. The inner display is 50 per cent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen.
The chassis is titanium with Ceramic Shield 2 on both front and back. Folded, it measures 3.31 × 4.64 inches and is 0.44 inch (11.3 mm) thick. Unfolded, that drops to 0.21 inch (5.2 mm). Full specs are listed on Apple’s iPhone Duo tech specs page. Weight is 8.96 ounces (254 grams), which is not nothing, but foldable glass and titanium hinges were never going to be featherweight.
Power comes from the A20 Pro chip with a 7-core GPU and Neural Accelerators. Battery life reaches up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and up to 31 hours on the inner display. For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro manages up to 45 hours. The Duo’s inner display does cost you something in endurance, which is the honest trade-off nobody wants to say out loud at a keynote.
Price: $1,999, confirming the rumoured figure, as listed on the Apple Shop. Chief executive John Ternus called the iPhone Duo ‘the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,’ according to the Apple Newsroom announcement. Bold claim, as all keynote claims are. Two thousand dollars will decide how many people agree with him.
Apple iPhone Duo Alongside the Rest of the Line-Up
For buyers who want an upgrade without the foldable form factor, Apple also announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro packs a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system with a variable aperture Fusion Main camera (ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, ƒ/4.0), a 48MP Ultra Wide, a 48MP Telephoto, and an 18MP Centre Stage front camera, per the iPhone 18 Pro product page. The standard iPhone 18 is not expected until next year.
Beyond iPhones, the Apple Events page confirms the keynote also introduced Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, and AirPods 5, going further than earlier speculation about a refreshed HomePod and camera-enabled AirPods.
A New CEO’s First Big Stage
The Duo is also John Ternus’s opening act. Ternus, formerly Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, became chief executive on 1 September 2026, following a unanimous board vote. Tim Cook transitions to executive chairman. The succession, according to the Apple Newsroom release on the transition, was the result of long-term succession planning rather than any sudden departure.
Alongside that, Apple named Johny Srouji as Chief Hardware Officer on 20 April 2026. Srouji, previously senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, now oversees both Hardware Engineering and hardware technologies, a remit that previously fell under Ternus. The appointment is detailed in Apple’s newsroom announcement on Srouji. So the company restructured its hardware leadership at the same time it was finalising its most complex consumer product in years. Whether that is confidence or coincidence is a question the next product cycle will start to answer.
The iPhone Duo is available to explore now on Apple’s site. The real test comes when early units land in reviewers’ hands and the hinge gets a few thousand folds.
