Hayden Panettiere died on 16 August in Greenville, South Carolina, cutting short a career that had begun before she could walk and a memoir that had only just reached readers. She was 36.
‘It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,’ her family said in a statement published by People. ‘She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her, and to the millions who watched her onscreen.’
People reports that Panettiere suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead from an apparent overdose. An acquaintance placed the 911 call after finding her unresponsive at a residence where she had been temporarily staying, with advanced life support administered before she was pronounced dead, according to a statement from the Greenville Police Department obtained by People. The preliminary investigation showed no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
An autopsy was completed the following day. Coroner Mike Ellis stated: ‘At autopsy no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to the death,’ adding that the cause and manner of death remain pending further investigation and completion of additional studies.
Hayden Panettiere died months after her memoir reached shelves
Born on 21 August 1989 in Palisades, New York, Panettiere was performing professionally almost from infancy, appearing in her first commercial at just 11 months old. Early television work included the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light, along with guest appearances on Ally McBeal and Malcolm in the Middle, according to the Golden Globes official database, before her breakthrough in Heroes (2006-10).
She is survived by an 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, from her relationship with Ukrainian former professional boxer Wladimir Klitschko, according to CNN. Her brother Jansen preceded her in death in 2023, at age 28, from aortic valve complications linked to enlarged heart syndrome.
Hayden Panettiere died having completed a memoir that became an instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller. Published on 19 May 2026 through Grand Central Publishing, an imprint of Hachette Book Group, the 320-page This Is Me: A Reckoning covered postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, domestic abuse, and loss, including her grief over Jansen’s death and her struggles with alcohol during her earlier years.
CNN also reported that she had at one point been hospitalised with jaundice, with doctors warning her that her liver was ‘going to give out.’ The book’s subject matter had been years in the making: People reported that Panettiere first teased the project in 2024 under the working title Scream and Break Free: Addiction, Trauma, and How the Cheerleader Saved Herself, before settling on the final name.
